Eden and Cedar Paul were an upper class Fabian socialist couple, prolific travelers and translators, swept up in the Bolshevik Revolution and active Communist Party of Great Britain of the 1920s, wrote this book in 1921 and introduced English-speakers to the term. A history of workers’ education as much as a treatise on the new movement in Russia, the book was not widely read in the US, this was its only edition, but became hugely influential in other countries, like Paul’s England and Japan, where it inspired a generation of student radicals in the 1920s.
