‘Communist Youth Beat International Soccer Champs’ from Young Worker. Vol. 3 No. 1. January 1, 1924.

CHICAGO. The Karl Liebknecht soccer football team of the Young Workers League of Chicago beat the Victoria IIs here today at Green View and Wrightwood to the tune of 2 to 1. The game was a cinch to the young Communist stalwarts and they beat the bourgeois team with ease. Comrades Wagner, Zerbes, Sandy and. Myerscough were the shining lights as usual, and they let the world know who they were by their red jerseys, with the Young Workers League insignia on their chests.

The last game played by the young Communist team was with the Western Electric Company team, a boss-controlled affair. The Western Electric boys were the champions of the International Soccer Football League of which both teams are members, but they went down in defeat before the superior playing and kicking of the Liebknecht boys. The score was 2 to 1, the winning point being made ten minutes before the game ended.

Games are played by our team every Sunday, and plans are being made for the formation of additional teams. Those wishing to join should apply at 1911 Center St. any Friday evening. Ask for the Karl Liebknecht Branch Sports Manager.

The Young Worker was produced by the Young Workers League of America beginning in 1922. The name of the Workers Party youth league followed the name of the adult party, changing to the Young Workers (Communist) League when the Workers Party became the Workers (Communist) Party in 1926. The journal was published monthly in Chicago and continued until 1927. Editors included Oliver Carlson, Martin Abern, Max Schachtman, Nat Kaplan, and Harry Gannes.
