Waterfront Worker (San Francisco). Vol. 3 No. 11. March 18, 1935.

The Waterfront Worker was a published by a group of rank and file longshore workers closely associated with Harry Bridges and the Communist Party that became known as the Albion Hall Group. Articles were necessarily signed with pen names and its editors anonymous. Distributed all along the West Coast, Waterfront Worker was instrumental in organizing opposition within the conservative I.L.A. in the years before, during, and after the 1934 General Strike. Eventually the dissidents would win many of the locals, with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union being born in 1937 through the struggle. A real workers’ paper, though mimeographed and ‘crude’ by today’s standards (and then), its pages were filled with humor, poetry, art, and shop floor news. The project was one of the most successful militant shop floor papers in our movement’s history and deserves a close look by today’s labor activists.
